Haywood M. Ball

PERSONAL STATEMENT OF HAYWOOD M. BALL, ESQ. “I was born on June 29, 1939 in Jacksonville, Florida and have lived here all of my life. I graduated from The Bolles School in 1957; received my BA degree from Washington & Lee University in 1961 and my law degree from The University of Florida College of Law in 1964.

I married my high school sweetheart Anne Tucker Towers on June 16, 1962 and we have three (3) children: William Tucker Ball, Sarah Ball Sharp and David Winchester Ball. We now have five (5) grandchildren.

I have had the pleasure of serving as a Board member, President, vice president and general counsel for Habitat for Humanity of the Jacksonville Beaches, Inc. and in that capacity have handled the closing on over 160 homes in the Beaches area during that time.

My hobbies and interests in addition to visiting my grandchildren are golf, carpentry, reading and traveling.

My son, Haywood M. Ball, Jr., died of leukemia in 1975 at age 9. I dealt with his cancer for over five (5) years and have experienced first hand the emotions and tragedy of dealing with leukemia. I am proud to serve on the Board of “FRIENDS” because I believe Rev. Elizabeth Barnhardt has exhibited such faith and has so much to offer families dealing with this dreadful disease.”

Rev. Elizabeth Barnhardt

Rev. Elizabeth Barnhardt is Vice President and Co-Founder of “FRIENDS” Respond In Every Need Doing Something, Inc. She is the Web Administrator, Author, and Co-Designer of the “FRIENDS” Web Site as well as the “FRIENDS” Testimony brochure that was copyrighted in 2007.

She is also employed full time at Beaches Chapel Church in Neptune Beach as the Women’s Minister where she has been an active member since February of 1987. Rev. Barnhardt also started and is Leader of GriefShare at Beaches Chapel Church, which is an international ministry for those who have lost a loved one.

In 1991, Rev. Barnhardt worked with the St. Johns County School Board Chairman and was responsible for co-ordinating, writing and implementing abstinence based curriculum for St. Johns County.

She is a life-long Floridian. Rev. Barnhardt was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and grew up in the town of Dania, where her father served as Mayor. “I learned the vital lessons of faithfulness, commitment, hard work, honesty, and serving from my parents who are still alive and together after 63 years of marriage.” Rev. Barnhardt graduated from South Broward High School, attended Florida Community College of Jacksonville, Jacksonville University, and received her Master’s Degree in Christian Counseling from Covington Theological Seminary in Rossville, Georgia.

Ms. Barnhardt states, “My parents were always involved with giving back to either the church or the community where we lived. My desire to serve God was inspired early from watching the devotion of my mother. At the age of 11 years old, I made a commitment and declaration to serve God all of my life. Eventhough I have made mistakes, had many trials and failures as well as successes and victories; God has al ways been with me and faithful to me.” My sense of community involvement was instilled from my father. My dad always told me one of the most important things you will ever do is vote. He also told me it is the God-given right of every human being in a free country and a free society to vote and choose; if you do not exercise the right to choose and vote, someone will end up choosing for you. I can remember being so excited about my 18th birthday, so I could finally vote. I drove my mother to the election poles and it was a monumental time."

Rev. Barnhardt was happily married to Frank L. "Bud" Barnhardt, Sr. for 22 years before he passed away in 1997. She states, “Bud and I always knew our daughter, Nicole, was our greatest gift and reward in life. The three of us were best friends and we loved each other deeply. Bud will always hold a special place in our hearts and in our memories.” In her spare time, Rev. Barnhardt enjoys playing tennis and watching football (especially th e University of Florida Gators, JU Dolphins, and Jacksonville Jaguars) with family and friends. She also loves traveling and boating with her daughter Nicole, and her son-in-law Robert.

Pastor Steve McCoy

Pastor Steve McCoy joined the staff of Beaches Chapel in 1977 as an Associate Pastor. In 1979, he answered a call to the northern suburbs of Chicago, and pastored there for 7 years. He returned to Beaches Chapel in March of 1986 and assumed his current role as Senior Pastor.

During his tenure, the church has experienced growth in every aspect. There are over 40 ministries actively operating at Beaches Chapel. Pastor Steve’s ministry has focused on meeting people at the point of their need, whether it is addictions, financial management, divorce care, parenting skills, health issues, and more. Beaches Chapel gives over $200,000.00 annually in support of missions and missionaries in the community and around the world. Beaches Chapel School remains an integral part of the ministry of Beaches Chapel Church, providing sound academic instruction in a loving environment for students in K4 through high school.

In recent years, Pastor Steve has led his congregation into ministry within the state’s prison system. Beaches Chapel established the first all-volunteer faith-based dorm, which was instrumental in Lawtey Correctional Institution being named the first Faith Based and Character Building prison in the nation. For his efforts, Pastor Steve was the Department of Corrections and the National Alliance of Faith and Justice’s (NAFJ) Volunteer of the Year in 2004. He serves as a Board Member and National Facilitator in the area of Prison Ministry and Restorative Justice with NAFJ. He travels extensively speaking on this subject.

Pastor Steve grew up in Atlantic Beach and graduated from Fletcher High School in 1970. While visiting the new Beaches Historical Museum recently, he was surprised to see a familiar picture on the wall entitled “Zinc Oxide.” It’s a group of young men, circa 1971, who were serving as lifeguards on Seminole Beach. He was able to name everyone in the picture, including himself! Pastor Steve says, “I have the rare privilege of pastoring my home church in my home town.” He and his wife Debbie have a daughter, Jennifer.
